It is a monestary circuit where all four buddhist sects are represented by monasteries in ladakh; from the oldest Nyimgmapa sect, the Drokhpa and saskyapa ones to the most recent(16th century) and widely represented sect, the Gelugspa.

Shambha-La is operational from May 01 till end October. September is the best month to visit.
