Heritage Hotels are attractions for any heritage traveller. The hotels come in many different types such as :


Following are type of Heritage Hotels :

  • Maharaja Hunting Lodges - These were earlier hunting lodges of Maharajas, typically found around Wildlife Sanctuaries. It typically houses stuffed animals (termed as hunting "Trophys") such as Tigers, leopards, bison, deers etc. (e.g. Kabini River Lodge)
  • Plantation Bungalows  - These were large bungalows of the planters and now showcasing the grand and classy lifestyle of the planters. (e.g. Glenburn Tea Estate)
  • Havelis - Havelis are where the servants of the Maharajas and the rich businessmen lived. It is home to some of the most intricate carvings, small sitout balconies (Zarokhas) and charming interiors. e.g. Samode Haveli is the finest example of such a haveli.
  • Comonial Mansions - Former Dutch / French / Portuguese / British settlements have some fine mansions which are now converted into charming heritage hotels. Fort Cochin, Pondicherry, Panjim, Ooty has a large number of these mansions. 
  • Parsi Bungalow - Zoarastrians (Popularly known as "Parsis") are a unique part of indian heritage. Parsis are a well read, well travelled community known for their exclusive tastes and lifestyle and known to maintain some very exclusive properties. Some of these are located at hill stations of Matheran and Panchgani and are pretty charming places to stay. e.g. Verandah in the Forest is a good example of these,
  • Summer Palace - Maharajas had their Palaces on Hill Station that are used as their residence during Warm Summer months. E.g. Palace Belvedere and Balrampur House in Nainital are such Summer Palaces.
  • Hotels with a Heritage - There are hotels that were built in pre-independence India and are a testimony to an era that went by and still catering to guests. e.g. Grand view in Dalhousie and Clarkes in Shimla are three examples of such hotels. 
  • Heritage Homestays - Indian Families in South India used to have large family houses and that are now charming heritage options. e.g. Olappana Manna is one such option near Thrissur / Palakkad.
  • Transplanted Homes - These are set of old homes which are transplanted and converted with one having modern facilities. Tharavadu, a traditional home from Chettinad region from Tamilnadu and other regions of Kerala is transplanted into Resorts in Kerala. e.g. Travancore Heritage in Kovalam, Coconut Lagoon in Kumarakom
