Pilgrimage Destinations in Uttar Pradesh

In Varanasi -Varanasi, considered home to Shiva, is also known as Kaasi because it is believed that Supreme brilliance shines there.

  • Kashi-Vishwanath Temple- is dedicated to the Hindu deity Vishveswara Shiva and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Is also known as the Golden Temple and is a popular religious tourist destination.

  • Durga Temple- also known as Monkey temple it was built in the 18th century and is infested with several monkeys.

  • Annapura Bhavani-has a gold idol of Goddess Annapoorna, shown to be carrying a cooking pot that signifies the fact that the deity is the goddess of sustenance and prosperity.

  • Lata Bhairava-houses an image of Bhairava carved on a pillar that is encased in copper and is covered with vermilion. Bhairava basically refers to the Hindu deity Lord Shiva.

  • Sankata Devi Temple- is a popular Hindu temple, the presiding deity is known as Sankata Devi the goddess who averts disasters.

  • Sarnath-is the place where Buddha delivered his first sermon.

In Mathura -

  • Dwarkadheesh Temple- built in 1814, is Matura's most visited shrine for its temple carvings and fine paintings and is beautifully decorated during the festival of Janamashtmi.

  • Kesava Deo Temple- a prison like room houses the stone salb on which lord Krishna is said to have been born 3500 years ago.

  • Gita Temple- has the text of the Bhagawat Gita inscribed in its entirety, along the walls of the temple.

In Vrindavan (15kms from Mathura) - is primarily a place of temples, with nearly 4,000 in number and is associated with the life of Lord Krishna.

  1. Krishna Balram Mandir (ISKCON VRINDAVAN).

  2. Banke Bihari Temple- is associated with Swami Haridas, a devotee of Krishna.

  3. Govind Dev Temple- was built in 1590 by Raja Man Singh of Amber in honour of the Divine Cowherd (Lord Krishna).
