Pilgrimage Destinations in Himachal Pradesh

In Chamba :

  • Laxmi Narayan Temple - built in the 10th century, the temple houses six temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Vishnu.

In Kangra :

  • Chamunda Devi - is located at a spot where the famous battle described in the Devi Mahatmaya took place. It is heard that Kali killed the two generals of Shumbha and Nishumba here.

In Dharamshala :

  • Jawalamukhi Temple (56 kms from Dhamshala) - is one of the fifty one Mahashakthi pithas. The various parts of Sati's body are said to have fallen, in the course of Shiva's Rudra Tandava. The tongue of Sati fell at the place where the temple of Jwalamukhi is situated. The flames that come out of the openings in the earth's surface are regarded as the manifestations of the fallen tongue of Sati and are worshipped as Jwalamukhi Devi.

  • Masur Temple - this ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Rama and is famous the richly ornamented cave temples.

In Una :

  • Chintpurni Temple - is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. A revered Shakti shrine where the Goddess is worshipped in the form of a stone lingam. The Pindi represents Sati's feet and is a manifestation of her.

In Bilaspur :

  • Naina Devi Temple - is one of the fifty one Mahashakthi pithas. The various parts of Sati's body are said to have fallen, in the course of Shiva's Rudra Tandava. Naina Devi is where Sati's eyes are believed to have fallen.

In Sarhan :

  • Bhimakali Temple - reputed to be at least 800 years old, is dedicated to Goddess Durga.

In Manikaran :

  • Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara - was constructed by Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji and is famous for the hot springs.

In Manali :

  • Hadimba Devi Temple - is a tribute to the supreme artist who sacrificed the very hand with which he carved this poem in wood dedicated to the goddess of the Dhoongri temple- Hadimba Devi, wife of Bhim- one of the Pandavas.

In Shimla :

  • Jhakhu Temple- is dedicated to the monkey God Hanuman. According to the legend, Hanuman rested on this hill after collecting the Sanjivani Jadibuti.

  • Hatkaoti Temple (104 kms from Shimla) - dedicated to Durga and Shiva. This is where the gods are said to have fought a perched battle.

In Sirmour :

  • Poanta Sahib - is believed to have been the holy Guru Gobind Singh's abode for over 4 years, where he penned the `Dasam Granth'.

  • Renukaji temple - The Renuka Lake (660m) is regarded as the embodiment of Renukaji, the wife of the sage Jamadagini and the mother of Parshuram one of the ten Avtars of Lord Vishnu.

  • Gurudwara Rawalsar - is famous for the big tank adjoining the Gurudwara, whose water has medicinal value.
