Pilgrimage Destinations in Karnataka

In Bangalore:

  • Bull Temple - built in the 15th century by Kempi Gowda is dedicated to Nandi, the mount of Lord Shiva. The temple has a statue of Nandi which is 15 feet tall and 20 feet broad.

  • St. John's Church - built in 1958, this church is an extension of a Chapel which got filled and was then transferred to St. John's Church.

  • Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara.

  • All Saints Church - built 1889 years ago to cater to the spiritual needs of the British troops.

In Mysore :

  • St. Batholomew's Church - built in 1830 A.D in a bunglow style without any of the Gothic elements of the church architecture of the era.

  • Ranganatha Temple (16 kms from Mysore) - is the largest temple in Karnataka and was found in 894 A.D by King Tirumalaiya. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha.

  • Keerthinarayana Temple - built in 1117 A.D. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is famous for the Hoysala type of Architecture.

  • Keshava Temple(38 kms from Mysore, Somnath) - built around 1268 A.D this temple was built by the Holsaya dynasty and is the last major temple built during their kingdom.

In Somnathpur:

  • Shrinathji Temple - built in the 17th century on spot exactly defined by the Lord himself. (The legend says that the bullock cart on which the idol was being transferred got stuck at this spot and refused to move).

In Mangalore :

  • Chamundeshwari Temple - situated at an altitude of 1062 mts this temple was built in the 12th century and is dedicated to Chamunda Devi.

  • Kadri Temple - houses a Lokeshwara statue reputed to be one of the best bronzes in India.

  • Mangladevi Temple - has its root into the 9th century. This temple gave Mangalore city its name and is dedicated to Goddess Mangla.

  • St. Aloysius Church - built in 1899-1900, the special beauty of the chapel is the wonderful series of paintings that virtually cover every inch of the interior roof and walls executed by Bro. Moscheni trained in Italy.

In Dharmastala: (75 kms from Mangalore) :

  • Manjunateshwara Temple- The main deity of the temple is Lord Shri Manjunatha Swamy. Lord Manjunatha symbolizes the close inter relationship of mythology, religion and scholarship in India

In Subhramanya: (120 kms from Mangalore) :

  • Subhramanya Temple- Lord Subramanya is called Sarpa Dosha Nivaraka (remedier). It is an ancient temple and is a must visit for any ex-mangalore pilgrimage itinerary.

In Udupi :

  • Sri Krishna Math - the unique feature of this temple is that the Lord is worshipped only through window with nine holes called the Navagraha Kitiki. The temple has a lamp beside the Deity of Sri Krishna said to have been lit by Madhvacarya and has never gone out since.

  • Ananthasana Temple - is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu and his personal expansion, the serpent Ananta Sesa, are said to reside within the linga in this temple.

In Sringeri

  • Sringeri Mutt - was built by Sri Adi Shankaracharya in the 9th century A.D on the banks of Tungabhadra. There are 12 zodiac pillars here in this shrine, which are so constructed that the rays of the sun fall on the pillar corresponding to the month.

In Murudeshwar (170 kms from Mangalore):

  • Murudeshwar Temple- This is a temple known for its very tall shiva deity. The sea on three sides surrounds the temple towering on the small hill called Kanduka Giri. The Murudeshwar temple has a history that dates back to a few centuries

In Gokarna :

  • Mahabaleshwara Temple- is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is famous for the 6-ft tall atmalinga enshrined in a square called Saligrama Peetha.

In Belur and Halebid :

  • Hoysaleswara Temple- dates back to the 12th century, this temple enshrines Hoysaleswara and Santaleswara.

  • Sri Channakeshava Temple- built in 1117 AD is a star shaped temple and is famous for the sculptures in stone depicting scenes from Ramayana, Bhagvad Gita and Mahabharata. Emperor Vishnuvardhana built this temple to commemorate his conversion from Jainism to Vaishnavism.

In Hampi :

  • Vittala Temple - a world heritage monument dating back to the 15th century is famous for extensive sculptured work, ornate pillars and the carvings that decorate them.

  • Virupaksha Temple - dedicated to Lord Shiva is in ruins but still in worship. Famous for the 50 m tall, elaborately carved gateway and has been renovated in 1510 by Krishnadeva Raya.

In Badami :

  • Cave Temples -

    • First Cave - dates back to 578 A.D and is dedicated to Lord Shiva and enshrines a Shivalingam.

    • Second Cave - is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and bears images of Vishnu in his Varaha and Trivikrama incarnations.

    • Third Cave - is 100-ft deep and dates back to the 5th Century. Houses carved images of Avatars of Lord Vishnu and also murals depicting the divine marriage of Shiva and Parvati

    • Fourth Cave - is a rock cut Jain temple and dates back to the 12th century.

  • Mallikarajuna Temple - is built on a star shaped plan and was built in the 11th century.

In Belgaum :

  • The Kamal Basadi Temple - dated back to the 10th century is under the protection of Archeological survey of India. The temple houses the 24 Tirthankars shown on the 72 petals of the lotus flower.

  • Bhagwan Neminath Temple - is stated to be 200 years old and was renovated in1845 AD. The temple houses a black idol of God Neminath.
