Nepal - What To Expect

Nepal is favourite destination for those who like Hills, Himalayan Views and landscapes. Nepal is also visited as as a part of Buddhist and Hindu Pilgrimage itinerary and as an high altitude adventure destinations.

What Visitors like

  • Kathmandu (4,500 ft)- Capital city with some sort of nightlife. This is also commercial capital and largest city in Nepal.

  • Pokhara - Lakeside village now grown to a small town and a base for adventure around the area.

  • Chitwan -  This is famous for its Royal Bengal Tiger Population and One of the last populations of single-horned Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), Panthers /Leopards, crocodiles, pythons, and several kinds of deer live in the Chitwan National Park.

  • Jomsom - Jomsom beautiful small town situated at 8400 ft at Kaligandaki River Valley and lap of Mt Dhaulagiri. It is considered mecca of high altitude trekking in the area and boasts of very good close range himalayan views.

  • Pilgrimage - Lumbini, Pashupatinath, Manakamana, Daman and Muktinathdham are popular pilgrimage destinations. Nepal is also access point for a Kailash Mansarovar yatra considered to be the ultimate pilgrimage destination.

What to Expect - Nepal has been a troubled Kingdom with pro-democracy and anti-monarchy movement and related uprising, conflicts and resultant violence was thwarted overall progress of Nepal. With changed constitution, general elections and resolution of monarchy related conflicts are expect within the year 2008. So a lot of Nepal is at least 10-20 years behind times in terms of communication systems, infrastructure etc. However there is exactly lies the charm and therefore Nepal is recommended for those who are looking for a bit of off-beat and a bit of the old world feel.

In contrast to the lagging infrastructure, Nepal has first class hotels and service provider infrastructure used to catering to Indians and Westerners alike. Due to the lower occupancy levels over the years due to lower tourist turnout on account of uncertainties prevailing on the political front, hotel rates aren't very expensive.

Due to its close proximity to the Himalayas, Nepal's biggest asset and attraction is obviously the Himalayan Views and adventure that goes with it. Some guests only want to laze around in front of them while others want to walk, trek and climb mountains. However being so close to Himalayas one would expect Himalayan views to be there all the time. Alas!  Himalayan views over the years in towns like Kathmandu, Pokhara have deteriorated on account of a combination of Pollution, Asian Haze and Climate Change.  Most posters, promotions of Nepal and pictures / images of Himalayas shown are old recycled ones and do not always represent the views you may expect at the time of visit.

Considering that Himalaya Views in different seasons have been affected to a different degree for different destinations, they always remain a matter of chance. On a very clear day one may get them very close to the poster perfect ones and on other days they elude completely.  However as a thumb rule, Winter months are always better when it comes to views as compared to Summer.
