Wildlife
The park is host to a number of fauna and is
abundant in wildlife. First time visitors are often
surprised by the great variety and quantity. It is
not unusual to see a wider range of animals in a
single morning's game drive at Bandhavgarh than a whole
week at some other reserves.Tigers in Bandhavgarh exhibit all the
natural behavioural patterns indicative of a thriving,
healthy tiger population.
Bandhavgarh has the highest tiger density in India and as
such is the perfect choice for those wishing to see or
photograph these magnificent creatures.
Carnivores include Tiger, Leopard, Bear, Indian Wolf, Dhole
(Indian Wild Dog), Striped Hyena, Jackal, Indian Fox, Jungle
Cat, Civet Cat, Porcupine, Mongoose. Herbivores include Sambar,
Chital, Barking Deer, Chinkara (Indian Gazelle) , Chausingha
(Four-Horned antelope), Nilgai, Indian Wild Pig. Reptiles
include venomous snakes such as the Cobra, Russell's Viper and
Krait, the non venomous Python and Rat snake , as well as a
variety of turtles and lizards.
Primates are represented by the Common Langur monkey and
Rhesus Macaque. Avifauna comprises up to nearly 300 species.
Common varieties include:Raptors- Serpant Eagle, Tawny
Eagle,White-Eyed Buzzard, Pariah Kite, Shikra, White-Backed
Vulture, Scavenger or Egyptian Vulture, Indian Eagle Owl,
Brown Fish Owl, Jungle Owlet, and Spotted Owlet.
Other common woodland and garden birds include Peafowl,
Junglefowl, Crow Pheasant or Coucal, Tree-pie or Tiger bird,
Common Quail, Golden Oriole, Black Drongo, Racket-Tailed
Drongo, Paradise Flycatcher, Indian Roller, Green Barbet,
Coppersmith, Indian Myna, Brahminy Myna, Red-Vented Bulbul,
Indian Nightjar, Golden-Backed Woodpecker, Indian Grey Shrike,
Green Pigeon, Spotted Dove, House Sparrow, House Crow, Jungle
Crow, Koel, Brainfever Bird, Hoopoe, Sunbird, Green Bee-Eater,
Blossom-Headed, Rose-ringed and Alexandrine Parakeets,
Yellow-Cheeked Tit, Grey Hornbill and Jungle Babbler to name
but a few.
Wetland birds include Sarus Crane, Black Ibis, Egret, Lesser
Adjutant Stork, Pied Wagtail, Red-Wattled Lapwing,
White-Breasted, Pied and Common Kingfishers and Indian Pond
Heron. Another good place for sighting water birds is the
nearby Panpatha Sanctuary and the Gharpuri dam on the fringes
of the park.
