The gigantic 15th century architectural marvel was built as a castle for Archduke Sigmund the Rich and then expanded further by Emperor Maximilian I in the the 16th century and given a total baroque makeover by Empress Maria Theresia in the 18th century. The centrepiece of the lavish rococo state apartments is the 31m-long Riesensaal (Giant's Hall), adorned with frescoes and paintings of Maria Theresia and her 16 children.

Rising above Innsbruck like a celestial staircase, this glass-and-steel ski jump was designed by Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid. From May to July, fans pour in in to see participants train for the World Cup Four Hills Tournament in January. It's 455 steps or a two-minute funicular ride to the 50m-high viewing platform. Here, the panorama of the Nordkette range, Inntal and Innsbruck is breathtaking, though the cemetery at the bottom has undoubtedly made a few ski jumping pros quiver in their boots.
The renaissance fortress was acquired by Ferdinand II, then ruler of Tyrol, who transformed it into a castle. There are three major things to look out for here which is: The Armour collection (include the archduke's wedding armour made to fit his bulging midriff), Art and Curiosity Cabinet (is crammed with fantastical objects, including a petrified shark, gravity-defying stilt shoes and the Fangstuhl – a chair designed to trap drunken guests at Ferdinand's raucous parties). The Portraitgalerie features room upon room of Habsburg portraits, with paintings by Titian, Velázquez and van Dyck.

The Patscherkofel is a skiing region south of Innsbruck that has a number of timbered ski-runs of the former Olympia-routes. In summer it is a great region for hiking along the forestline. Take the tram line up as it will take you through the most picturesque regions. The region houses several winter sports such as ski jump contest. Thanks to its rough terrain the place houses some fantastic and thrilling sports for adventure junkies. Go rock-climbing on the Alps or river rafting on crystal clear rushing mountain brooks and adventurous canyoning tours through breath-taking Alpine gorges.
The Swarovski Crystal World, created by Andre Heller, is a pure invitation to dream. Only a 20 minutes drive away from Innsbruck this sparkling fantasy world is definitely worth a visit. In 1995, for the 100-year anniversary of Swarovski, the multi-media artist Andre Heller created a place of true amazement with 14 subterranean Chambers of Wonder. In 2003 and 2007 the so-called home of crystals became extended with new chambers. More than 8 million people have been enchanted by this world of experiences encompassing the full spectrum of art, music, dance and literature. This unique crystalline theatre is Austria's second most visited attraction, right after Schönbrunn Palace.

Perched in a narrow gorge on a rock 100 metres above the waters of river Inn is this extraordinary Benedictine monastery. The Monastry was rebuilt in the 17th century and again in the 10th century (originating from the mid-10th century) is accessible only by the wooden bridge across the valley floor. The monastery is a major pilgrimage spot and a wonderful, but steep, walk along the River Inn through the narrow confines of the gorge. Train from Innbruck to Stans-bei-Schwaz (30 minutes) - then simply follow the track up the hill and into the gorge.

A few kilometres outside Innsbruck lies the small village of Schwaz which seems to keep a sparkling secret of hidden old Silver Mine. The management loads you onto a mini-train catering for 10 people and takes you a mile underground. The train stops every few hundred metres to hear a conductor (foreign language headsets are available at each stop) explain the history of silver mining in this area. It is definitely an experience and worth a visit. The silver mine is the only in Austria open to the public, this is a fascinating experience.

If you are travelling with your kids, do take them here for the day. Portraying itself as a conservation-oriented zoo, you will find some of the rarest alpine wildlife which will fascinate your senses. Be lucky to spot golden eagles, chamois and ibex up in the Alps in their natural habitat. To get there, walk up the hill from Rennweg or take bus from the Marktplatz.

If all you want to do is relax and sit back for a day then visit the natural swimming pool Badesee Rossau (Baggersee) surrounded by a green terrain and bustling with families picnicking with their baskets or swimming or paddling on a boat. There are plenty of sidewalks where you can take a stroll or go off biking on the foothills. It is absolutely safe.
