Camel
Fair: The colourful Pushkar Camel Fair, one of India's
biggest festivals, brings visitors from all over the world.
The date of the fair can vary according to the Hindu calendar
but it always falls on the full moon of Kartik Purnima, or
sometime in October/November. More than 200000 people bring
an estimated 50,000 camels to the town. The objective is not
only livestock trading but also pilgrimage and festivities
in the form of camel races and street theatre. Musicians and
jugglers regale the tourists and pilgrims alike as the town
throbs with activity.
Temples:
Pushkar is the only place in the world where Lord Brahma,
the Hindu God of Creation, is worshipped. Brahma Temple, the
most important temple is dedicated to this deity. A one-hour
trek up to the hilltop Savitri Temple overlooks the majestic
lake and celebrates Brahma's wife, Savitri.
Ghats:
A visit to any of the numerous bathing ghats is a spiritual
experience par excellence. Thousands of pilgrims can be seen
taking a holy dip in the waters of Lake Pushkar to the haunting
accompaniment of religious chants and ringing bells.
