Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary - Wayanad near Sultan Battery

Established in 1973, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Muthnaga Wildlife Sanctuary)  is contiguous to the protected area network of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka on the north-east and Madumalai of Tamilnadu on the south-east. The animal population of the sanctuary comprise Elephant, tiger, Panther, jungle cat, civet cat, monkeys, wild dog, bison, deer, bear, etc. inhabit the sanctuary. Reptiles like monitor lizard and a variety of snakes are seen. Peacock, babblers, cuckoos, owl, wood pecker and jungle fowl are only a few among the different types of birds seen in the area

Due to Thick tree cover sightings are difficult but the experience of a safari through rainforests is recommended. Jeep Safaris can be done in Private 4-wheel Drive Jeeps. Tranquil Plantation Provides Safaris at the park.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary - Near Thekkady

Apart from Elephants, the other animals to be seen in the Periyar sanctuary are Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian Wild Dog and very rarely, a Tiger. There are, now, an estimated 40 tigers here. Four species of primates are found at Periyar - the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur And Bonnet Macaque. The birdlife comprises of Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, the great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed Drongoes. 

Periyar wildlife sanctuary has a picturesque lake at the heart of the sanctuary. Though its a Tiger Reserve, tourists come here to view the Indian elephants in the act of ablution and playfulness by the Periyar lake. Cruises are undertaken by the forest dept and reservation support for these cruises are provided by all resorts in the Thekkady / Kumily Region (6 kms from the gate).

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary near Thodupuzha/ Idukki

World-renowned Idukki Wildlife Reserve is located adjacent to the Idukki Arch Dam which is a safe haven for countless species of wildlife, a boat-trip in the reserve can leave you lucky in spotting wildlife in all its grandeur - Elephants, Bisons, Sambar Deers and a lot of birds. PARAMBIKULAM WILD LIFE SANCTUARY - 100 kms from Palakkad

It is one of the best sanctuaries in Kerala sprawling over an area of about 285sq. km.The Kannimare Teak Tree said to be Asia 's largest, stands about 5 km. from Thunakkadavu. Trekking in the sanctuary is possible with the permission of forest officials. Indira Gandhi Wild Life sanctuary is one of the best in India . At top slip there is an elephant camp with 33 elephants. The facility for elephant ride is provided here.

SILENT VALLEY NATIONAL PARK - 80 Km from Palakkad    

The Sole surviving bit of evergreen forests in the Sahya Ranges covers about 9000 hectares named Silent Valley due to is own peculiarity. Huge hollow wild tree can hide 12 people. A clean and beautiful Kunthi Puzha (River) flows along the valley. There are luxuriant tropical wet evergreen forests with lofty trees, rare species and progenitors of cultivated spices of pulses and species. Elephant, Tiger, Wild dog, flying squrrel and lion tailed macaque are the animals found here. This rich abode of rare plants and animals become Kerala's Second National Park . Madras Govt. has declared it as a reserve forest from 1888 onwards. British people have constructed bungalows inside the forest. There is no bamboo in the forest. 665 numbers are plants; trees and orchids are found here. The abstract of latest census of wild life conducted in 1993 is given below.

Thattekad - Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary

Thatekkad Bird Sanctuary is situated in the tropical grassland patches. Thattekad Sanctuary is located in the Kothamangalam 25 kms from Kochi Airport on the bank of the Periyar River. The Sactuary has a population of about 500 species spread over 25 sq. km. Rare birds like the Crimson-Throated Barbet, Bee-eater, Sunbird, Shrike, Black winged Kite, and the Night Heron are also commonly sighted here. Park Safaris can be arranged by Birds Lagoon Resort here by Boat or by Jeep.

Neyaar Wildlife Sanctuary near Kovalam (50 kms)

The vegetation varies from tropical to grasslands. Wildlife in Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary:
