It is at the religious and geographical heart of the city and the giant Pummerin bell features on television as it rings in the New Year. Vienna's Gothic masterpiece, commonly known as Stephansdom, has stood on this site since the 12th century, and today what remains is the Romanesque Riesentor (Giant Gate) and Heidentürme. From the outside of the cathedral, the first thing that will strike you is the beautiful tiled roof. Take good notice of the pulpit and the intricate carvings and embellishments on it. It is a shame that the architect is unknown. You will not get enough images here.

Sisi, or Empress Elizabeth, was the wife of Franz Josef 1 of Austria who she married when she was only 16. The museum provides you with an insight into the private life of her personal belongings as well as a history of her and perhaps the most famous monarch, Emperor Franz Joseph's fascinating life.
Hofburg Imperial Palace serves as the official residence of the President of Austria. It was the Habsburg Empire's principal winter residence, while Schönbrunn Palace was their preferred summer residence. From 1438 to 1583, 1612 to 1806 and 1918 thereafter, the palace observed the seat of the kings and emperors that ruled the territory. You will observe the architecture as more roman and gothic and less Austrian by itself as the Roman Empire initially ruled the country after which the Emperor of Austria took over from 1918.

For more than 600 years it was the official residence of the Habsburg emperors. Today, the impressive buildings contain important museums and state rooms. This ring tram is a continuous hop-on, hop-off guided tour of the Ringstrasse that lasts 25 minutes with video screens and commentary on a clockwise route stopping at 13 stations. You can get on and off at any stop on a tour.

If you are a lover of art, you are sure to love this place. At Schönbrunn the imperial family had 1,441 rooms to choose from, many of which are open to visitors. The Schlosspark contains a number of architectural masterpieces such as the Palm House and the zoo: the oldest zoo in the world which began in 1752 by Maria Theresa. She was known as the popular mother of the Austrian nation and was devoted to her husband: Emperor Franz I. She chose to be buried next to her husband in Stephan of Lorraine. Their tombs can be seen at the Habsburg burial crypt in the Kapuzinergruft.

Perched by the river Danube, Dürnstein is one of the most-visited villages in the Wachau Valley wine-growing region and is accessible from both Vienna (1 hour)and Salzburg(2.5 hours). There are over 20 vineyards within stamping distance of Durnstein so the little town makes the perfect starting point for a day's trip through the vines or to an estate to tour the cellars; you can also get to sample some of the Wachau's crisp dry whites at the rustic little heurigen (wine bars) scattered around the region, although they are not open all year around. The ruins of Kuenringer Castle are situated on the hill above Dürnstein, the fortress where Richard the Lionheart, King of England, was held captive after being captured and held for ransom by Duke Leopold V (a Babenberg). The ransom was apparently used to rebuild Vienna The church has one of the finest baroque towers in all of Austria, and if you can go inside, there is some unique artwork showing the suffering of Jesus Christ and the tabernacle at the altar with 44 images of the life of Jesus. You can also take a cruise on the river Danube to enjoy a better view of the village. Ask the tour operator to plan you day visit by booking a wine tasting at one of the estates.
