Falaj Daris is the largest falaj in Oman, a traditional water distribution system dating back 2000 years. In 2006, the Falaj Daris was listed under the UNESCO World Heritage. The reason for Nizwa's historic prosperity is often attributed to the abundant water, supplied by the 134 aflaj (plural for falaj) in Nizwa. Today, only a hundred of them are in use. A section of the falaj to the north of Nizwa has been restored and developed in a park; however, only 200 metres of the falaj are visible before it disappears underground.
