Built between 1510 and 1517, the Aqaba Fort served as a stay over for pilgrims travelling to Mecca. The fort was occupied by the Ottomans till 1717, until the fort was destroyed by shelling by the British Royal Navy.
    Heritage Site
A 20 km stretch of coast around Aqaba offers some of the world's best diving and snorkelling sites. The coast of Aqaba is considered as one of the most beautiful in the world because of its transparency and a variety of corals, sea life and mild climate. Aqaba became a popular diving site only in recent years, and has managed to avoid deterioration of its coral reefs. Most of the diving sites are located in Aqaba's south coast. Popular among them are the First Bay, and Abdullah Reef.
    Scuba Diving
Pharaoh's Island is a beautiful island located in the Egyptian coast around 17 kms from Aqaba. The island is a small granite atoll surrounded by coral reefs and is a popular diving site. The island is home to a UNESCO World Heritage listed citadel built by the Crusaders and later restored by Salah ad-Din. Pharaoh's Island can only be reached by an organised tour from Aqaba.
