Located on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal (red-light district), it is the oldest of the five main churches in the historic centre. It is the city's oldest surviving building (from 1306) built to honour the city's patron saint, St Nicholas. Quite uncontrary to its surroundings, carvings on the choir stalls are downright provocative. You can climb the tower from April to September on Saturday & Sunday, every half-hour to enjoy a fabulous bird's eye view of the city. Make sure you either do that early or stop by to book a climb in the morning.
