Skiing

Following are Skiing Options in India:

Auli (Jan - March) - 500 kms from Delhi and 250 kms from Rishikesh

This is best and now renowned ski resort in India. Its accessed via a spectacular cable car ride from Joshimath and offers skiing slopes for beginners as well as professionals. The Govt. Institute here runs 1 week and two weeks ski training certification courses. Ski lifts, snow beaters, certified instructors, quality equipment and very good ski slopes makes for a very good ski resort despite its relative in accessibility (No Airport in 300 kms vicinity and hilly terrain) . National level ski championships are regularly held here.

Note: Indifferent snowfall in 2006 and 2007 season ensured that skiing could not be done uninterrupted and had to be stopped in between. So check the snow levels before planning the dates.

Solang Valley is hub of all the adventure activities in Manali. Skiing is one of those activities. Skiing in Manali is more of fun skiing as day visitors from Manali flock the area and take a try at the casual skiing.

Gulmarg (Jan-March) - 46 kms from Srinagar Airport (Jan - March)

Some of the best slopes in the country for beginners and intermediate skiers are available at Gulmarg. Skiing equipment is available on hire from the Ski-Shop. In winter Gulmarg's natural slopes and inclines turn into the country’s most scenic skiing resort.

Among the multitudes of slopes, there are a few which are serviced by ski lifts. Most of the skiing becomes centred on these slopes, which are specially suited to beginners and intermediate level skiers, with ski runs ranging from 200 m to 3kms, instructors are available for both levels.

Skiing infrastructure is still being developed and so Gulmarg with its spectacular setting and almost assured snow cover, is set to be the premier ski resort.
