Torre del Mangia is a 88 metre high tower in Siena. The tower was built in 1338-48 in the Piazza del Campo, in the heart of Siena. The tower gets its name from its first keeper, Giovanni Duccio famously known as 'mangia-guadagni or 'the money eater' since he spent most of his money eating in Siena's taverns. Legend has it that some coins engraved with Latin and Hebrew letters were buried during the laying of the foundations of the tower to ward of thunder and tempest and protect the tower. The top of the tower offers exceptional views of Siena.
