The Treasury (Photo Courtesy: Bernard Gagnon)

With its beautiful Hellenistic façade, the Treasury is most iconic tomb of Petra. The local legend has it that the urn on top of the monument held an Egyptian pharaoh's treasure, hence the name Treasury. It is believed that this royal tomb carved out of iron-laden sandstone was built for the Nabatean King Aretas III. The Treasury's famous façade, a blend of classical and Nabatean architecture, depicts a variety of statues of gods, animals, and mythological figures. The best time to visit the Treasury is in the morning between 9-11 am and in the evening between 5-6 pm when the sun shines on the entire building making the reddish-pink sandstone glow.
