Built by Sultan Qaboos to mark the 30th year of his reign, the Grand Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the Gulf. The mosque is built is spectacular modern minimalist Islamic architecture and its two prayer halls and surrounding courtyard can accommodate a whopping 20,000 worshippers. The interior of the mosque is rich and opulent, with the second largest hand-loomed Iranian Carpet in the world and a large Swarovski crystal chandelier. The Grand Mosque is the only mosque in Oman open to non-Muslims. Children under the age of 10 are not permitted and dress code is modest.
