The Ljubljana Castle is perched on top of a majestic hill overlooking the city. Originally built in the twelfth century, the castle was reconstructed in the sixteenth century following an earthquake. For centuries the castle was used to defend the city. Today between June to September the castle serves as venue for the Ljubljana Summer Festival. The highlight of the castle is the observatory tower that offers spectacular views of Ljubljana and the Julian Alps. The castle can be reached by foot, for the more adventurous, or by a furnicular railway that departs hourly from the Ljubljana Tourist Information Centre. Entrance to the Castle Courtyard, Chapel, Wall and Gift shop is free, but there is a charge for access to the tower.
