The Great Temple of Petra (Photo Courtesy: Bernard Gagnon)

Built in the 1st century BC, the Great Temple is one of the few freestanding structures in Petra. Although the temple was damaged in an earthquake shortly after it was built, it remained in used until the late Byzantine period. It is believed that the temple was probably dedicated to Dushara, the principal deity of Petra, however the discovery of a small theatre within the temple complex suggests that it may also have served as a public place.
