Spis Castle is a 12th century UNESCO World Heritage castle located at one hour from Kosice. The castle is one of the largest castles in central Europe and is situated on a travertine hill near the town of Spisske Podhradie. The castle was reconstructed by Stefan Zapolsky in the 15th century. In 1780 the castle compound was destroyed in a fire gradually leading to the decay of the castle. The castle was completely restored in 1970. The castle is home to a museum exhibiting the history of the castle and medieval arms.
