Skader Lake is the largest lake on Albania and Montenegro's border on the Balkan Peninsula. The Montenegro part of the lake was declared as a national park and the Albanian part has been designated as a “Managed Nature Reserve'. Skadar Lake is one of the largest bird reserves in Europe and a well known hotspot of freshwater biodiversity. Skadar Lake National Park is a vast freshwater lake surrounded by karst mountains and hosts an array of wildlife with more than 260 species of birds, traditional fishing villages, islet monasteries and pristine beaches. Since 1983, this Park has been protected and was later added to the World's List of Wetlands of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention.
