Schloss Neuschwanstein is probably the world's most famous fairytale like castle set atop a mountain near Füssen. Designed as a romantic medieval castle, the Neuschwanstein castle was commissioned by King Ludwig as a personal retreat and a homage to Richard Wagner. Although the work for the castle begun in 1869, like many of Ludwig II's ambitious projects, it was never finished. This castle is one of the most visited places in Germany, with over 1.3 million people visiting it annually.
