Salzburger Dom Cathedral (Photo Courtesy: Andreas Praefcke)

Surrounded by the Residenz Castle and St. Peter′s Abbey the mantelpiece over the main window is a face making a grimace towards the Residenz, the Prince Archbishop′s castle. It was made to show to the people that the mighty Abbot of St. Peter′s could risk messing with the Prince Archbishop. The first cathedral was built on this site by Bishop Virgil who came to Salzburg in 767 and built a cathedral on the site of the former Roman Juvavum. On September 24, 774 the cathedral was consecrated to St. Virgil and St. Rupert.
