Living Root Bridges of Cherrapunji are made from the roots of the Ficus elastica tree. This tree produces a series of secondary roots from higher up its trunk and can comfortably perch atop huge boulders along the riverbanks, or even in the middle of the rivers themselves. So an area that is one of the wettest places on earth and perennial rivers, living room bridges are important river crossing points for locals. Living Root Bridges are not found anywhere in India and are accessible via a 2 km trek. There is even a double decker living root bridge (requires full day trekking) which is one of its kind in the world.
