Holstentor Gate (Photo Courtesy: Peter Haas)

Built in 1464, Holstentor served both Lübeck's defence and its prestige, a colossal double-towered city gate. It is the most notable icon which was the motif on the German banknote of 50 Marks until 1990. The towers add to the skyline and were restored after they were battered during the Second World War. You can visit the monument during your cycle tour around the city or a morning walk. Do not miss the night vision of the monument as it is mesmerising!
