The Lalit Srinagar lakeside experience
(Nivalink Trip Dated - 8 May 2006)
The Lalit Srinagar is a Grand Palace and a heritage / luxury experience, only of its kind in Kashmir. Maharaja Pratap Singh built the palace in 1910 and has hosted dignitaries over a century. Maharaja Hari Singh designed the Palace himself and decorated it with best of furniture, upholstery, fittings, paintings from local artisans, ethnic carpets and handicrafts etc.
It was called "Gulab Bhavan" then. Gulab Bhavan was converted into The Grand Palace – the only five star hotel Srinagar (5000+ ft asl) in 1956.
The Gulab Bhavan of then, was carefully renovated and restored in early 2000s as "The Lalit." Special care was taken to reflect luxuries of a heritage grand experience while retaining the architecture and grandeur of the era gone by.
There are not many heritage hotels with so much of history and character. The wide and clear lakefront and relative ease of access (flight to Srinagar) makes it a destination resort and an excellent luxury lakeside getaway.
