There are pilgrimages in India like Shirdi Saibaba Temple, Deosidt Temple, Dhyanalingam have no specific religion attached to it but are still visited by devotees from all over. 

 


Catholic Pilgrimages in India

While Vailankanni is regarded as the most visited Catholic shrine in South India, there are number of other pilgrimages that are revered and have significance for Catholic pilgrims.

There are number of Churches South of Madurai that have 16th century significance related to arrival and miracles of St Francis Xavier. 

While Vypeen (near Cochin) is visited as a standalone pilgrimage, others can be visited as a part of a circuit.

Islamic Pilgrimages in India

Ajmer Dargah, Mumbai (Haji Ali Dargah) and Nagore Dargah are generally regarded as three most visited Islamic pilgrimages in india. 

Old cities of India (Luckow, Bhopal, Agra, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad etc.) have some very majestic mosques of the Mughal era offering stunning architecture and are vsiited as part of heritage itineraries by all travellers.

There are many pilgrimages in India that are not specifically linked to a religion, however are standalone major pilgrim centres. Most promiment among them are as under:

Pilgrim Circuits

India is home to many regional pilgrim circuits especially in West, North and South India and some group of temples that are considered holy to have been visited at least once in one's lifetime and are visited specifically by pilgrim travellers. Some of the prime examples of Pilgrim circuits include Jyotirlinga (12 Lord Shiva Temples), Shaktipeetha (18 major Devi Temples), Ashtavinayak (8 Lord Ganesha Temples in Maharashtra) etc.

 

 


Jyotirlinga and Shaktipeetha

Some of the prominent Pilgrim circuits in India are as under:

Jyotirlinga - Jyotirlinga are set of 12 Shiva Temples spread all over India and considered holiest for Shiva devotees. Its rather an arduous task to visit all at once and therefore most devotees make it a point to visit all over a period of time, sometime part of an Itinerary and sometime two or three at a time.

  • 5 Jyotirlinga Temples in Maharashtra
  • 2 Jyotirlinga Temples in Madhya Pradesh
  • 2 Jyotirlinga Temples in Gujarat
  • Standalone Jyotirlinga Temples (Kashi Vishwanath (Varanasi), (Uttar Pradesh), Rameshwaram (Tamil Nadu), Srisailam (Andhra Pradesh), Kedarnath (Uttarakhand), Deoghar (Jharkhand))


Shaktipeetha - 
Shakti Peethas are where different parts of Goddess Shakti have fallen when Lord Vishnu's ChakraSudarshana Chakra, cut through the corpse of Sati. There are totally 50+ such locations and not all are undisputed. 18 of these are universally accepted as Shaki Peethas and are collectively known as Maha Shakti Peethas. 

  • Standalone Shaktipeetha - South India - Kanchipuram (Tamil Nadu), Mysore (Karnataka), Alampur (Andhra Pradesh), Srisailam (Andhra Pradesh), Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), Kanyakumari and Suchindram (Tamilnadu) 
  • Standalone Shaktipeetha - West India - Kolhapur (Maharastra), Mahur (Maharastra), Tuljapur (Maharashtra), Saptashrungi near Nashik (Maharashtra), Ambaji (Gujarat), Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh)
  • Standalone Shaktipeetha - East India - Jajpur (Orissa), Kolkata (West Bengal), Tarapith (West Bengal), Guwahati (Assam), Gaya (Bihar), Deoghar (Jharkhand)
  • Standalone Shaktipeetha - North India - Vaishnodevi (Jammu), Jwalamukhi (Himachal Pradesh), Varanasi and Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh), Naina Devi (Himachal Pradesh), Sarahan (Himachal Pradesh)

Some of the Shaktipeetha temples are located within Jyotirlinga Temple complex and therefore both are often combined together as part of a pilgrim getaway / break / itinerary.

Ashtavinayak Temples
 (Maharashra - Western India) - Ashtavinayak means "eight Ganeshas". The term Ashtavinayak also refers to a pilgrimage to the eight temples in Maharashtra that house eight idols of Lord Ganesh viz. Ballaleshwar at Pali, Chintamani at Theur, Girijatmaj at Lenyadri, Mahaganpati at Ranjangaon, Moreshwar at Morgaon, Siddhivinayak, at Siddhtek, Varad Vinayak at Mahad, Vighneshwar at Ozhar. 

Ashtavinayak is done ex-Mumbai / Pune as part of 1 night / 2 days (hectic), 2 nights / 3 days (less hetctic) trip. Customised as well as fixed departures are organised for Ashtavinayak pilgrimage including Vidhivat Ashtavinayak. 


11 Maruti Temple Circuit
(Maharashtra - Western India) - 11 Maruti Temples are a set of 11 Lord Hanuman temples in Maharashtra established in 17th Century by Saint Samarth Ramdas. These temples are located around Satara, Karad, Kolhapur area and are visited as part of a Circuit. 


Pancharama Circuit
(5 Lord Shiva Temples - Andhra Pradesh - South India) - The Pancharama Kshetras or the Pancharamas are five ancient Hindu temples of Lord Shiva situated in Andhra Pradesh. According to legend, these five pieces were installed as Sivalingas at five different temples by Indra, Surya, Chandra, Vishnu and Kumara Swamy at the respective places. These are typically visited ex-Rajahmudry / Vijayawada / Kakinada. 


Panchabhoota Stalam
(5 Lord Shiva Temples - Andhra Pradesh / Tamil Nadu - South India) - Pancha Bhoota Stalam refers to the five Lord Shiva temples each representing one of the five elements of nature i.e. land, water, air, sky, fire. These typically visited ex-Chennai. 


Arupadaiveedu Circuit
(6 Lord Murugan Temples - Tamil Nadu - South India) - The six most sacred abodes of Hindu god Lord Murugan called as "Aarupadaiveedu".  They are spread all over Tamilnadu and visited as part of a circuit ex-Chennai. 


Navagraha Circuit
(Navagraha Temples around Kumbakonam - Tamil Nadu - South India) - Navagrahas simply mean nine planets and there are nine temple located in Tamil Nadu representing each. All nine of them are located within a 60 kms radius around Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district. Planets and temple combination are listed as under. These can be covered within 2 days ex-Kumbakonam


Navatirupathi Circuit
(Nine Lord Vishnu Temples around Tuticorin - Tamil Nadu - South India) - There are 9 Lord Vishnu temples within 50 kms radius of Tuticorin referred to as Navathirupathi and visited as a circuit. Temples are located on or just off the Tiruchendur – Thirunelveli road.


Nau Deviyan Circuit
(Nine Devi Temples in North India) - Nau Deviyan Pilgrimage Circuit is a popular Hindu pilgrimage circuit covering 9 major Devi temples in North India. Some of these temples are believed to be Shaktipeetha Temples as well and are all renowned regional pilgrimages
