Detailed Itinerary

Day-1 Arrival at Calicut. Travel to Wayanad. Evening visit to Banasurasagar. Arrival at Calicut. Proceed to Wayanad (4500 ft asl - 80-120 kms - 2.5-4 hrs). Wayanad in North Kerala is an evergreen area renowned for its Rainforest character, tea plantation, getaway resorts and salibrious climate all round the year. Evening visit to Banasurasagar Dam.

Day-2 Wayanad Local Sightseeing Explore sightseeing around Wayanad such as Edakkal Caves, Pookode Lake / Boating, Soochipara Waterfalls, Ancient Jain Temple.

Day-3 Proceed to Mudumalai. Activities around Mudumalai. Proceed to Mudumalai (100 kms - 3 hrs). Mudumalai is a National park and a nature centric getaway on foothills of Ooty, renowned for a nature centric experience for off-beat and experiential travellers.. Enjoy trekking (Mountain Treks, Riverside Treks, Grassland Treks) OR visit Theppakadu Elephant Camp visit OR go for a Jeep Safari in Bandipur (requires pre-booking).

Day-4 Excursions around Masinagudi Plantation visits (Spice Plantation (Cardamom, Pepper, Vanilla), Tea Estate & Tea Factory, Coffee Estate) OR half day trips (Gopalswamibetta, Silk (Sericulture) Farm, Tribal Villages, Historical Places (Hero Stones) OR undertake Bird watching treks (Couple of hours, half day and full day)

Day-5 Departure Depart to Coimbatore (120 kms - 3.5 hours) for onward journey.

Masinagudi :

  • Bird Watching in Mudumalai - Mudumalai is home to 200+ bird species. Some prominent endemics species linclude Malabar trogon and Malabar grey hornbill. Other predatory include crested hawk-eagle, crested serpent eagle, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Black Eagle, Oriental Honey-buzzard etc. Mudumalai is a recommended Bird watching destination.

  • Elephant Camp Theppakadu - Theppakadu Elephant camp is where one can enjoy being around elephants, feed them and enjoy a kind of elephant experience. This is popular with inbound travellers and families with kids. Museum near the Elephant feeding camp is where some animals who once lived in the Mudumalai Jungle are preserved

  • Walking in Mudumalai - Walking in jungle is possible around Masinagudi with forest permission. Forest department from time to time restricts this. One can take upto 10 km walk / trek around doing a bit of bird watching and spotting wild animals. Taking a guide along is a must.

  • Wildlife and Bird watching at Bandipur - Bandipur forests with its deciduous habitat is the ideal spot for viewing animals like elephant, gaur, wild boar, sambhar. 200+ varieties of birds are spotted in the area especially in winter (Oct - March) such as Paradise Fly-Catcher, Hornbill, Woodpecker, Thrush, Crested Hawk Eagle etc. Jeep safaris are arranged by few lodges around the area.

Wayanad (Vythiri) :

  • Pookode Lake - Pookode lake is set near Vythiri having a fresh water aquarium, children's park and boat house.

  • Anantnath Swami Temple - Anantnath Swami Temple is a Jain temple at 6 km from Kalpetta and is dedicated to Ananthnath Swami, a Jain Tirthankar.

  • Banasura Sagar - Banasura Sagar Dam is one of the biggest Earth dam in Asia and it attracts lot of tourists for Boating.

  • Soochipara Falls - Soochipara Falls is a three-tiered 650+ feet waterfall in Wayanad at 15-20 minute drive from Meppadi. It takes 15 minutes walk from parking area to the waterfall. The cliff face here is excellent for rock climbing.

  • Edakkal Caves - Edakkal caves are renowned for its pre-historic carvings and paintings. The caves contain drawings that range over periods from as early as 5000 BC to 1000 BC.

Destination Overview

Coimbatore - Coimbatore is the second largest city in state of Tamil Nadu and a major textile and engineering hub. The plantation areas Coonnor and Valparai and hill station of ooty and kodaikanal are accessible from here.

Calicut - Calicut is a major town in North Kerala and a preferred access point for most North Kerala destinations.

Wayanad (Vythiri) - Vythiri and Lakkidi are rain forests at just 65 kms from Calicut. Vythiri (3000 ft) is surrounded by rain forests and tea plantations all over and enjoy a pleasant weather all round the year.

Masinagudi - Mudumalai is a popular ex-Bangalore weekend getaway and is visited as a part of Karnataka / Tamilnadu itineraries. Mudumalai is excellent for a more nature centric stay.
