This is an itinerary recommended for guests looking to do a bit of walking / trekking and go away from touristy areas and be with nature. Thanedar (7500+ ft asl), Sangla (9000 ft asl) and Shoja (8500+ ft asl) are three completely off-beat destinations and promoted by Banjara Retreats as Himalayan Golden Triangle.

Detailed Itinerary

Day-1 Arrival at Chandigarh. Proceed to Thanedar Arrive at Chandigarh and proceed to Thanedar (7500+ ft asl - 190 kms - 6 hours).

Day-2 Walking around Thanedar There are number of walks around Thanedar such as Saroga Forest Walk, Walk to Church, downhill walk from Hatu peak etc. that offer guests allow for some acclimatisation and offer a nature centric experience.

Day-3 Narkanda - Sangla Proceed to Sangla (9000+ft asl, 150 kms - 5 hrs) enroute take a detour for Sarahan (7000+ ft asl, 17 kms off NH-22) is visited for Bhimkali temple, an old wooden temple considered one of the Shaktipeetha temple. It offers excellent Himalayan views. Reach Sangla by late afternoon / evening.

Day-4 Walking around Sangla Enjoy walks around the area. There are several walks / trails along the river such as Rakcham walk, Sangla village walk that offer acclimatisation alongwith an excellent riverside / Himalayan experience.

Day-5 Excursion to Chitkul or trekking around Sangla Excursion to Chitkul (10000+ ft asl, 25 kms from Sangla) (last village before the Indo-Tibetan border where you see awesome Himalayan views). One would require to walk 3 kms (one way) from vehicle drop point to the border check post. Those interested in Fishing, may opt for Trout fishing (permits to be obtained in advance. Guest to carry rod). Adventure oriented guests can opt for overnight camping to Sangla Meadows.

Day-6 Excursion to Kalpa or come back from overnight trek Adventure guests will come back from overnight camp around Lunch time. Other guests may opt for a day excursion to Kalpa (40 kms), a pilgrim town known for Himalayan views and ancient Shiva temple.

Day-7 Sangla - Shoja Proceed to Shoja (8500 ft asl, 170 kms - 6 hrs) via Jalori pass. Evening walk around Shoja, time permitting or just enjoy stunning views (Himalayan views on a clear day).

Day-8 Walking around Shoja Guests have option to take walks around the area. Options here are Serolsar Lake (5 kms - half day), Waterfall point (2 hour walk), Raghupur Fort (6 kms - half day) etc.

Day-9 Shoja - Chandigarh Proceed to Chandigarh (260 kms - 7 hours). Arrive by evening.

Day-10 Departure Depart for onward journey.

Detailed Sightseeing

Sangla :

  • Trout Fishing in Baspa River - For the enthusiasts it is a treat to angle for trouts in the crystal clear waters of the Baspa River in Sangla Valley. Day permits can be arranged from the local authorities. Indias first trout breeding farm was set up in Sangla way back in 1926. Besides April, October is the best time to angle for Brown and Rainbow Trouts.

  • Rakcham Walk - A signature walk of the valley, this route was once used regularly by the villagers from Batseri to go to Rakcham. It is a fascinating walk through a wide variety of flora. If the trek is done before June, one also gets to cross two tails of glaciers coming from the top to meet the frisky Baspa. Takes about about 4 hours

  • Walk to Sangla Village - A walk along the Baspa River offering stunning views of the valley, overlooking Himalayan peaks and Baspa River. Can visit Trout Breeding Farm enroute.

  • Chitkul - Indo Tibetan Border Checkpost - Chitkul is the Last village on the old Hindustan-Tibet trade route. A km walk would lead one to the Indo tibetan Check post. The panorama of Chitkul is most stunning with imposing close range Himalayan views. Just a cup of tea admiring views and surroundings could be nothing short of an experience.

  • Shiva Temple Kalpa - Shiva Temple at Kalpa (8000 ft asl) here which is well visited by tourists to the area. Guests stay here overnight especially to catch glimpse of the Kinner Kailash range of Himalayan views which are best in the mornings

Shoja :

  • Waterfall Point - Waterfall Point is nature at a distance of approximately one kilometre walk from Shoja

  • Serolsar Lake - Serolsar Lake is a beautiful lake, situated at a distance of around 5 km from the Jalori pass in Shoja. This lake is approachable via a walk from Shoja.

  • Raghupur Fort - Raghupur Fort was built at 11000 ft asl and has a small pond within its premises. Raghupur Fort is approached via a trek from Shoja.

Thanedar :

  • Walk to Church - A Walk all the way down to the valley (4 kms) to a Church built in 1843. This church at Kotgarh is one of the oldest churches in India.

  • Saroga Forest Walk - This is a good two hour evening walk exploring the forest around the area (Upto 8 kms).

  • Walk down from Hatu Peak - Hatu Peak (11000 ft asl) is the highest peak in the area and walking downhill from Hatu peak is interesting an hour and a half walk to get acclimatised.

Destination Overview

Thanedar - Thanedar, an apple orchard growing area at a height of 7,250 ft and 80 km from Shimla and 18 kms from Narkanda off the NH-22.

Sangla - Sangla is a village, situated at an altitude of 8,792 ft in Baspa Valley of Kinnaur District. It has majestic views of Kinner-Kailash Peak

Shoja - Shoja (or called Sohja or Sojha) is a Himalayan hamlet (8500 ft asl) 5 kms short of Jalori Pass. The area is blessed with exceptional Himalayan beauty and is excellent for walks, treks, bird watching and a nature centric experience.

Chandigarh - Chandigarh is a major business centre and hub for Software, IT and ITES companies. Chandigarh is a tourist destination being a transit point for guests on Delhi - Manali route and an access point to visit neighboring hills of Himachal Pradesh and hill station of Shimla.
