This is an itinerary that covers two diverse and remote regions of Himachal Pradesh i.e. Sangla Valley (a green riverside area at 9000 ft asl known for walks, treks and exceptional himalayan beauty) and Spiti Valley (a desert like area known for high mountain passes, adventurous drives and high altitude monasteries at 10000-12000 ft asl).

Detailed Itinerary

Day-1 Arrival at Chandigarh. Proceed to Narkanda Arrive at Chandigarh and proceed to Narkanda (8000+ ft asl - 170 kms).

Day-2 Narkanda - Sangla Proceed to Sangla (9000+ft asl, 150 kms - 5 hrs) enroute take a detour for Sarahan (7000+ ft asl, 17 kms off NH-22) is visited for Bhimkali temple, an old wooden temple considered one of the Shaktipeetha temple. It offers excellent Himalayan views. Reach Sangla by late afternoon / evening.

Day-3 Walking around Sangla Enjoy walks around the area. There are several walks / trails along the river such as Rakcham walk, Sangla village walk that offer acclimatisation alongwith an excellent riverside / Himalayan experience.

Day-4 Excursion to Chitkul or trekking around Sangla Excursion to Chitkul (10000+ ft asl, 25 kms from Sangla) (last village before the Indo-Tibetan border where you see awesome Himalayan views). One would require to walk 3 kms (one way) from vehicle drop point to the border check post. Adventure oriented guests can opt for a full day trekking (with packed Lunch). Those interested in Fishing, may opt for Trout fishing (permits to be obtained in advance. Guest to carry rod).

Day-5 Sangla - Nako adventurous drive (Via Kalpa) Proceed to Nako (11000 ft asl. 110 kms - 4 hours) enroute visit Kalpa (20 kms off NH-22 , known for Himalayan views and a Shiva Temple). Drive to Nako is one of the most adventurous and challenging in India. Evening visit the Nako lake and Monastery. Take a walk around the lake, the village.

Day-6 Nako - Kaza via Tabo and Dhankar Monasteries Proceed to Kaza (12000+ ft asl, 110 kms - 4 hrs) enroute visit Tabo (ancient monastery set at 11000 ft asl) and Dhankar Monastery (1000 year old ancient monastery set at 11000 ft asl) .You may also visit the Mummified Lama at Giu. Reach Kaza by evening.

Day-7 Ki Monastery. Visit world Visit Ki Monastery (One of the most significant and ancient monasteries in the area), Gete at 14000+ ft asl and Kibber at 14000+ ft asl are known for being the highest inhabited villages in the world).

Day-8 Kaza - Manali via Kunzum La pass and Rohtang pass Proceed to Manali (6500+ ft asl, 200 kms - 10 hrs) via Kunzum-la Pass (15000+ ft asl) and Rohtang Pass (12000+ ft asl). This drive is most adventurous and passes through riverbeds, glaciers and a route with stunning Himalayan backdrop.

Day-9 Manali - Chandigarh Proceed to Chandigarh (292 kms - 8 hours). Arrive by evening.

Day-10 Departure Depart for onward journey.

Detailed Sightseeing

Kaza :

  • Ki Monastery - Ki Gompa, is a 11th century monastery the largest in the valley. Located above Kaza at the height of 4116m, fine murals and valuable collection of Kangyur - ancient Buddhist texts are its attractions.

  • Dhanker Monastery - 24 km from Tabo, 800 year old Dhanker Monastery is one of the most significant Tibetan Buddhism monastery in the area. The monastery overlooks the confluence of Pin and Spiti rivers. An hours walk from the monastery takes you to the beautiful Dhankar Lake.

Nako :

  • Nako Lake - Nako lake at 11000+ ft asl is a quaint lakefront in middle of one of the remotest villages in Kinnaur and offering a most stunning Himalayan Panorama. Highly recommended for Photographers.

  • Nako Village Walk - Nako Village walk gives a glimpse of the lifestyle in the remote village where till very recently were not even connected with outside world. The walk covers Lake, Monastery and bylakes of Villages. Must for Photographers and experiential travellers.

  • Nako Monastery - Nako Monastery is one of the oldest Monastery on the ancient routes followed by Lamas over centuries. There is even a residence of Dalai Lama for his convenience whenvever his Holiness visits the area.

Sangla :

  • Trout Fishing in Baspa River - For the enthusiasts it is a treat to angle for trouts in the crystal clear waters of the Baspa River in Sangla Valley. Day permits can be arranged from the local authorities. Indias first trout breeding farm was set up in Sangla way back in 1926. Besides April, October is the best time to angle for Brown and Rainbow Trouts.

  • Rakcham Walk - A signature walk of the valley, this route was once used regularly by the villagers from Batseri to go to Rakcham. It is a fascinating walk through a wide variety of flora. If the trek is done before June, one also gets to cross two tails of glaciers coming from the top to meet the frisky Baspa. Takes about about 4 hours

  • Bhimkali Temple Complex - Bhimkali Temple is a old wooden structure temple considered one of the Shaktipeetha Temples and situated right in middle of the town overlooking Himalayan Views. Typically Visited enroute Sangla Valley even if it's a 17 km detour from the NH-22

Destination Overview

Narkanda - Narkanda (8000 ft asl) is an area surrounded with orchards and a transit point on the Hindustan tibet road (NH-22).

Sangla - Sangla is a village, situated at an altitude of 8,792 ft in Baspa Valley of Kinnaur District. It has majestic views of Kinner-Kailash Peak

Nako - Nako is about 100 kms from Sangla Valley; Set around a lake, Nako is a important centre of Buddhism and a stopover on the Sangla - Kaza route.

Kaza - Kaza (12000 ft asl) is capital of the Spiti valley and its largest town. Kaza has monasteries (Most notably Ki Monastery), World's highest inhabited villages and amazing high altitude views.

Manali - Manali (7000 ft) is a major hill station and a preferred Ex-Chandigarh weekend Getaway and a destination for Honeymooners, adventure lovers.

Chandigarh - Chandigarh is a major business centre and hub for Software, IT and ITES companies. Chandigarh is a tourist destination being a transit point for guests on Delhi - Manali route and an access point to visit neighboring hills of Himachal Pradesh and hill station of Shimla.
