Festival | Cultural Festival

Famous Pongal, the harvest festival, is celebrated in the second week of January every year. It literally means "boiling over" and is a celebration of the flourishing crops in the fields. This festival was celebrated by the farming community, but today it is celebrated throughout the South India.

During the festival, houses are beautified with rangolis and flowers. In certain parts, cattle races enliven the village festivities. Community meals using the freshly gathered harvest are also held at many places.

Apart from Andhra Pradesh, it is celebrated with much pomp in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Karnataka.
