Reasons to Visit
  • Shimla is a renowned holiday resort that used to enjoy the status of being the summer capital of the British Raj, is now the state capital of Himachal Pradesh.
  • Raj Bhawan area and Mall Area are higher and therefore enjoy better feel than lower areas around the Station where it feels more like a city than a hill station.
  • It snows in Shimla and winter when it does snow is the only time Shimla looks like a destination.
  • Due to Global warming and its after effects the snowfall has reduced and unpredictable and therefore one cannot plan a trip in advance for the snow experience.
  • As Roads have improved (Delhi-Chandigarh and Chandigarh - Shimla), Kalka-Shimla train is something to be used only if experience of heritage train is a must.
  • Shimla is covered as a weekend Getaway Ex-Chandigarh / Jallandhar / Ludhiana and as a part of larger itinerary covering other Areas of Himachal Pradesh.
Know It
  • Guests during summer prefer to skip Shimla and stay at numerous destinations that have now come up around Shimla (Chail, Kufri, Shilon Bagh, Naldehra etc.) and prefer to do a day visit to Shimla. Today, Shimla is crowded and overdeveloped over the years and has completely lost its heritage feel. During peak season its full of traffic and getting a place to park the vehicle is a headache (Despite presence of few car parks). Mall and few other areas are sealed and only can be covered on foot. Heritage Train timings require an overnight stay in Chandigarh or Parwanoo and dont have connections from Delhi except one overnight Kalka Mail.
  • Popular Hill Stations of India"Shimla (6500+ ft asl) is capital of Himachal Pradesh and now a crowded hill station. Tourists like to visit Mall road and colonial era structures and explore areas around Shimla such as Chail, Fagu, Kufri, Naldehra etc. as day excursions"
  • Popular Destinations of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab"Shimla (6000+ ft asl - 120 kms from Chandigarh) is a colonial era hill station and capital of Himachal Pradesh. Modern day Shimla is most crowded and commercial therefore attracts only travellers who are unaware of the lack of charm and character. Other travellers prefer to stay on outskirts at destinations such as Shoghi (15 kms), Mashobra (15 kms), Kufri (25 kms), Naldehra (25 kms), Chail (50 kms). Typical Stay - 2 nights"
  • Colonial Heritage Hill Stations of India"Shimla was developed in early 19th Century and used to be the Summer Capital of the British Raj and therefore historic in many ways. British built in 1903 a Railway line to facilitate the transfers. The UNESCO-recognized train route passes through 102 tunnels and crosses over 850 bridges and remains till today an attraction. Shimla of today is a bit crowded and touristy but there are enough areas such as the Vice Regal Lodge, Clarkes Hotel and wooded walks that would take any heritage traveller "
  • Heritage Hill Stations to visit for Heritage Train Experience"British built a train from Kalka to Shimla in early 1900s. Shimla was then Summer capital of the British Raj and therefore of historical significance. The Train journey is now one of sought after experiences for the heritage / Inbound traveller. Total journey time is about 5 hours (Starting 12 noon). "
  • Airports and Popular Access points for Himachal Pradesh"Shimla railway station is where guests arrive for a heritage train experience. Jabarhatti Airport near Shimla (20+ kms) offers an Airport access for Shimla, Spiti Valley, Sangla Valley etc. destinations"
