Udayagiri - Khandgiri Caves are a set of ancient caves North of Bhubaneshwar (10 kms) significant for heritage travellers. Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves, formerly called Katak Caves or Cuttack caves, are partly natural and partly artificial caves of archaeological, historical and religious importance at 10 kms from Bhubaneswar in Odisha.
It is believed that most of these caves were carved out as residential blocks for Jain monks during the reign of King Kharavela. Caves are ornately carved and built during 2nd century BCE.
There is a Jain temple atop the hill and is popularly visited (required to climb steep steps). Hills offer superb views of the Bhubaneshwar town and are popular for travellers to arrive in evening for superb views.
Udayagiri - Khandgiri Caves are visited as part of day sightseeing ex-Bhubaneshwar.
