Thiruvannamalai is where the Annamalaiyar Temple, a temple of Lord Shiva is located. The area is popularly known as Arunachala. Every year the hill is lighted during the Month of Oct-Nov. It is one of the 5 main Shiva Pilgrimages in South India.

The ashram of Sri Ramana Maharishi, Sri Ramana Ashram is also situated at its foothills and it gets a large number of inbound guests all through the year that arrive for a long stay.

Thiruvannamalai is on the Bangalore (215 kms) - Pondicherry (105 kms) route and also visited as a standalone getaway from Chennai (195 kms) and from here Chidambaram is only 110 kms away.
