Typically one arrives to Kaza via stunning Grand Canyon like Sangla - Tabo - Nako route.
Sangla - Kaza is about 200 kms but best done in two segments with Nako as a perfect mid-way.
Till one passes Recong Peo (Largest town in Kinnaur), there is very little evidence of what’s coming in next 70 kms ride. Petrol Pump near Reckong Peo is the last for a whle, so best to fill up the fuel tank here. One can consider taking a detour (20 kms) to Kalpa via Reckong Peo.
The panorama changes from about 20 kms after Reckong Peo. Road gets narrower and one literally drives on a road that’s cut out of a mountain with Grand canyon like deep gorges all around. You may encounter couple of unscheduled stopovers on account of some landslide or some boulder falling down. It’s an everyday affair here and local administration and military is equipped to clear it off. This route is important for Military as it connects Tibet border with rest of India.
Few kilometers after Puh as one leaves Hindustan Tibet road, the panorama changes and road winds through pebble filled mountains with some pea, potato and apple cultivations at a distance. Its incredible to imagine that with resilience of local population staying above 10000 ft asl and their unique farming techniques, the region is no longer a high altitude desert it once was and now growing high quality pea, potato and apples.
Nako is a lakeside village, one of India’s more remote and home to Nako monastery, an important monastery in Tibetan Buddhism. A walk in Nako Village gives a glimpse of their lifestyle, culture and customs. Village still has traditionally made homes and modern world constants like soft drinks and ready snacks hasn’t arrived here. There is so little written about Nako that its sure to be the surprise package of the itinerary.
After Nako the road to Tabo can throw more surprises. There is one point where pebbles fall 24 X 7 and it kept getting cleared by the local administration (Incredibly). A detour to a mummy at Giu could be interesting. Tabo is a small town centred around the monastery. There are a couple of restaurants and hotels here. Tabo monastery is most interesting for a visit. Dhankar monastery after Tabo again is interesting as well.
