Nako (11, 000 ft asl) list just a few kilometers off the point where NH-22 ends near Indo-Tibetan border, is the high altitude Oasis of Nako. Nako is a scenic lake front remote village in Kinnaur district in close proximity to high altitude desert of Spiti Valley.

Nako is home to a monastery, significant for Tibetan Buddhism and followers of Dalai Lama. Nako Lake is the most picturesque. Nako village is one of the most remote (telephone lines came here around the year 2005) and still has houses built in traditional architecture with culture, customs and traditions all remaining intact over generations.

A walk around Nako lake, monasteries and the village gives one a feel of the area, its remote character, difficult nature of the terrain and friendly people / their culture and lifestyles.

During summer the hardworking Nako villages incredibly are able to grow peas, potatoes and Apples, even at this high altitude. Just look at the terrain kind of gives one feeling of awe and amazement at the hard working Kinnauri local population.

Nako is an excellent overnight stopover enroute Sangla Valley - Kaza route.
