Gangtok is capital of Sikkim and home to The Enchey Monastery (established in early 20th Century) belonging to the Nyingma order of Buddhism, is located at Gangtok (capital city of Sikkim).
Enchey is a well visited all through the year by tourists as well as pilgrimage oriented guests. Other monasteries around Gangtok are :
Rumtek is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery on outskirts of Gangtok (5500+ ft asl - 20 kms). Rumtek is the largest and one of the most significant of all monasteries in Sikkim. Originally built by the 9th Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje in 16th century, Rumtek was rebuild in 1960s to its formal glory. Pilgrimage oriented guests also visit Sang Monastery, near Rumtek (Built in 1912).
Phodong is a town 38 kilometers north and is home to a very ancient monastery.
Monasteries on the Gangtok - Mangan Route comprise Phensang Monastery - Built in 1721 and rebuilt again in 1948 and Chawang Ani Monastery.
