Matheran (2500 ft) is a heritage hill station located on off the Mumbai-Pune route. What makes Matheran different from other hill stations is the restriction on use of cars and vehicles. Instead, you need to take a horseback ride or hand rickshaw or walk 3 kms from nearest parking lot to reach. Matheran is also renowned for its heritage train, one of the four heritage train routes still operating in India (Heritage trains to Shimla, Darjeeling and Ooty being other three).
It goes without saying that Matheran is good for anyone who loves walking. There are number of view points that can be walked to. The dense evergreen forest cover is all over Matheran and construction ban / preservation efforts have all meant that Matheran retains the same pre-independence look and feel even today with colonial era buildings all over the area con-existing with a few modern hotels / resorts.
