Mangalajodi Bird watching
Mangalajodi is a village overlooking part of Chilika lake at 65 kms from Bhubaneshwar. Mangalajodi was a village of poachers a few years ago. Thanks to a progressive forest officer, the village has now been transformed into a village of bird protectors and a major bird watching destination. Shallow lake here offer excellent About 150,000 birds migrate here during end Summer (Sept) and return at end of the Winter (March).
The boat safaris is run by local village council with villagers offering services of boatmen and bird guide. Slow country boat ride in Manglajodi offer opportunity for photographers to take close range pictures of birds, closer than any other park or birding area anywhere else.
Birds comprise mainly water birds, waders, herons, storks, bitterns etc. During 2 hour boat safari during end Feb 2018, we saw 40 species of birds without much of an effort. During peak season of Nov-Jan, can see as many as 100 species in a day (2 Safaris). If one was not to take safaris one can keep walking around periphery of the lake and may find birds in abundance.
Country boat safaris here is nothing short of an experience for every traveller and must visit for a bird watcher.
Where to Stay - You may stay overnight at Manglajodi (rural homestays) or undertake a day excursion from Puri or Bhubaneshwar.
Season - Sept-Feb is a good time for birding. Nov-Jan period is the best for most number of species
