Kottayam is a base town for the plantation highlands and one of the major cities in Kerala. There are a number of significant temples / churches and pilgrim centers around that are visited by pilgrimage centric travelers.
Bharananganam (25 kms from Kottayam) - The 1000 year old St Mary’s Church here is an important pilgrim centre in Kerala. The mortal remains of the Blessed Sr. Alphonsa are laid to rest here.
Thrikodithanam Temple, Changanacherry (21 kms South of Kottayam) - This is said to be one of the five temples where the idol of Lord Vishnu, worshipped by the Pandavas is kept. Deepam (lamp) festival held every November/December. This temple is also counted among the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu.
Ettumanoor (11 kms North of Kottayam) – Ettumanoor Mahadevar Temple is a prominent Lord Shiva temple in the Kottayam area. It hosts the arattu festival celebrated on a grand scale on the Thiruvathira day in February–March every year.
Vaikom Shiva temple (22 kms North of Kumarakom, 37 kms from Kotayam) - The Vaikom Mahadeva temple is one of the few temples which is held in reverence by both Shaivaites and the Vaishnavaites.
Kaduthuruthy Thaliyil Mahadeva Temple (24 kms North of Kottayam) - Mahadeva temple is one among the famous three Shiva temples in the area along with Ettumanoor and Vaikom.
