Kushinagar near Gorakhpur (54 kms) en route to Kapilavastu, Lord Buddha fell ill and left this world back in 543 BC and is visited for the Mahaparinirvana Temple. Many of the ruined stupas and viharas here date back to 3rd century BCE - 5th century CE when prosperity was at its peak. The Mauryan emperor Ashoka is known to have contributed to significant construction at this site.

Lumbini lies 100 kms from Gorakhpur across India-Nepal border and is Buddha's Birth Place. Garden of Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has monasteries from many Buddhist nations. Kapilvastu near Lumbini is also a Buddhist site.
