Sunrise View from Kedarnath
Kedarnath is a Lord Shiva temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlinga Shiva Temples and one of the Char Dhams (Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri are the four pilgrimage destinations in Uttarakhand state popularly known as the Char Dhams). Kedarnath is situated at about 200 kms from Rishikesh and is accessed via 14 kms trek or via a helicopter ride from a base point near Rudraprayag.
Kedarnath is visited during May-October period is considered the toughest Char Dhams to access and ultimate pilgrimage experience for a Shiva Devotee.
Area around Kedarnath is blessed with exceptional Himalayan beauty and is recommended for any nature lover.
Kedarnath is one of the Paanch Kedars (Five significant Shiva temples in the area) along with Madmaheshwar, Kalpnath, Tungnath and Rudranath. Generally, the pilgrimage to Panch Kedar is undertaken via a trekking route covering all five temples.
Area around Kedarnath temple was completely swept away in end June 2013 due to flash floods and land slides. The Kedarnath yatra was stopped thereafter and is slated to restart from 2014 season.
