Karla Caves – Buddhist heritage caves
Lonavala (2000 ft asl) is a getaway on the Mumbai – Pune route, about 100 kms from Mumbai and 60 kms from Pune.
Karla Caves (11 km off Lonavla) is a complex of Buddhist caves, which are dated over 2000 years old with the oldest one believed to dated as much as 160 BC. Karla caves houses a monastery and a temple dedicated to Ekaveera, which has considerable local significance.
Karla Caves are visited by school groups, select inbound guests and local tourists all round the year.
