Kancheepuram (62 kms from Chennai) is renowned for being the city of a thousand temples. Ones that are most visited are 7th Century Kailasanatha Temple, Ekambareswarar Temple (Panchabhoota Temple) with a 180-foot high gopuram; one of the tallest in South India, the 14th Century Kamakshi Amman Temple (a Shakti Peetha) and the hundred-pillared Varadharaja Perumal Temple (Divya Desam). Kancheepuram is equally renowned for being the home of pure silk sarees that are known and sold all over India and the world as "Kanjeevaram Sarees".
Kancheepuram besides a renowned heritage getaway is also an imporatant stopover on Panchabhoota circuits and other pilgrimage itineraries of Tamil Nadu, and can be considered for a standalone pilgrim getaway.
Kancheepuram is typically a day visit option for guests ex-Chennai / Mahabalipuram or guests arriving from Tirupati stay over before moving onwards.
