East Coast Road (ECR) Experience
Tamilnadu State Highway 49 is renowned and known as the East Coast Road (ECR). ECR is believed to be the most scenic coastal highway in India with views of the Bay of Bengal on one side and one passing by greenery, rivers, backwaters, temples, mosques, UNESCO heritage structures enroute.
690 kms long ECR currently connects Chennai with Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Chidambaram, Tranquebar, Karikal, Nagore, Nagapattinam, Ramnanathapuram (near Rameshwaram), Tuticorin. Work is on to connect Tiruchendur, Manapad and Kanyakumari as well. Eventually it will become a 1000+ kms coastal highway.
A road trip on the ECR is opted for by Biking groups, self drive enthusiasts and any guests looking to explore South India countryside, cuisine, culture, heritage and craft. An ECR Journey is one where urban chaos is left far behind while one explores India’s countryside and rural heartland.
A shorter ECR trip routes such as Chennai to Pondicherry are more routinely opted for by local getaway seekers. The complete ECR route is opted for by inbound travelers and experiential travelers over a few days.
