Driving in Coorg
Coorg as a region is best visited ex-Mysore (100-120 kms) or ex-Mangalore (150-180 kms) or ex-Bangalore (230-270 kms). The area is known for coffee plantations and salubrious weather (2000-4000 ft asl) all round the year.
Madikeri is the only destination within Coorg region that has a city center kind of a feel. Otherwise Coorg as an area is about 2000 sq km does not have crowded habitation, market areas or any commercial development. The area is full of networked roads where one can crisscross across the plantations with no major elevation or drop with the height ranging from 2000 ft asl to 3500 ft asl. The Coffee plantations, salubrious climate and lack of much of traffic or commercial activities make driving, bicycling around the area nothing short of an experience.
There will be plenty of view points and corners to stop and take a few photos. There are dirt roads within these plantations, which could be good for a 4-wheel drive. However an experienced local guide would be needed to be along for that.
