Bird Watching in Pulicat Lake

Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary is a 481 km² area bordering Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu at 55 kms from Chennai. Pulicat Lake is the second largest brackish-water eco-system in India after Chilka lake in Orissa. The sanctuary is most noted for the many Greater Flamingos seen here
Other water birds in the area include Spot-billed Pelican, seven species of herons and egrets, Painted Stork, Greater Flamingos, ducks etc. Several species of wintering waterfowl have been noted. Birds of prey which appear in winter are the: White-bellied Sea Eagle, Osprey, Harriers and Peregrine Falcons. The largest concentrations of Flamingos occur in the Andhra Pradesh part of the sanctuary, around the islands of Vendadu and Irukkam.
Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary is a day visit from Chennai and popular with bird watchers in winter.
