Periyar (140 kms from Madurai and 110 kms from Kottayam / Munnar) is the largest and most populous park in Kerala but a bit difficult to explore as well from wildlife perspective but excellent for bird watching.
320 species of birds are found in Periyar. The birds include raptors, water birds, galliform birds, pigeons, woodpeckers and passerines. The sanctuary is home to the Malabar gray hornbill and has other exotic birds like the Ceylon frogmouth, Malabar trogon, White-bellied treepie and Heart-spotted woodpecker.
Guests can opt from a number of eco-tourism centric programmes run by the forest department. One can explore the park on foot (walk / trek) or bamboo raft for bird watching as a part of these programmes.
