Bhopal is a lake city and capital of Madhya Pradesh. Bhopal has a rich heritage be it architecture or cuisine. Taj Ul Masajid is India's largest mosque and therefore main attraction of Bhopal.
Bhopal is also from where there are several excursion options. Sanchi (46 kms), a Buddhist heritage site. Sanchi is the most evocative and attractive Buddhist site in India and is the most visited of all Buddhist stupas in India. Sanchi Stupas are important part of the Buddhist Pilgrimage Circuit and has been recognised as a UNESCO World heritage site.
In addition to Sanchi Buddhist Pilgrimage, there are number of interesting monuments around Bhopal that are worth a visit:
* Udaygiri caves, near vidisha, 13 kms from Sanchi, are a rock-cut caves, dating 320-600 A.D.
* Bhojpur, (28 km), home to Bhojeshwar Shiva Temple.
* Bhimbetka, (40 km) home to 700 rock shelters with paintings belonging to the pre-historic age cave dwellers (UNESCO Site).
* Udaypur, (90 km), home to Neelkantheshwara Temple, is worth a visit for its architectural significance.
Within Bhopal there is Taj-Ul-Masajid (Largest mosque in India), Tribal museum, Vah Vihar Zoological Park and a number of view points and attractions that are popular with tourists. Bhopal is an excellent standalone 2 night getaway / city break for heritage travellers.
